Fixing a Leaking Chimney in Springfield, Ohio
Challenge
A Springfield, Ohio homeowner's chimney began leaking. He called Klaus Roofing of Ohio to see if we could fix the leaking chimney as soon as possible, and an appointment was scheduled for the next day. Upon inspection, Certified Inspector Jimmy Torchia found that there were old and algae-covered corners of the roof and the area was covered with black streaks. Over time, your roof is exposed to many elements, decreasing its life span. If not attended to, your roof can undergo issues including mold, algae, and water retention. These problems begin to seep into the attic and eventually your home. The homeowner decided to replace the roof. Within the next few days, our crew arrived at the home to replace the roof.
Solution
Our crew arrived at the home, on time, and began to repair the roof. They first removed any branches, shrubs, and plants that laid across the roof, and placed a tarp across the ground to collect the old materials. Our crew then proceeded to tear the old roof. Once the old roof had been removed, our crew inspected the roof deck and replaced any rotting plywood with our thick CDX plywood. Once the deck was repaired, our crew then placed our ice and water membrane, which prevents leaks from icy and rainy weather, and they used 4" wide polymer modified bitumen seam tape. Once everything was set in place, our crew then proceeded to install the new shingles and did a final clean-up after the new roof was fully installed.
This home is a great example of needing repairs with IKO GoldshieldIce & Water around the chimney, as well as replacing all flashing around the chimney. Chimney leakage can allow water to seep into not only your chimney and fireplace but also your attic and ceiling. These leaks can also cause roof and drywall damage through wood rot. Luckily, this homeowner recognized the importance of fixing a roof before it causes damage to the rest of the house.
